Twenty-three Chadian soldiers lost their lives, and 26 others sustained injuries during a Boko Haram assault on a military base in the Lake Chad region. The attack occurred on the Barka Tolorom island base in Lake Chad province around 10 p.m. local time, as confirmed by Chadian army spokesman Issakha Acheikh Chanane. Chadian forces retaliated, eliminating a significant number of Boko Haram militants and confiscating their weapons.
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno expressed heartfelt condolences to the nation and wished a swift recovery to the wounded soldiers under treatment. He reaffirmed Chad’s unity and resilience in the face of the assault. Earlier, on March 3, 2026, President Deby Itno reported the killing of eight Boko Haram militants by Chadian security forces in the Lake Chad region. The militants had targeted Chad’s Defence and Security Forces on March 2, but were met with strong resistance, resulting in the death of eight attackers.
President Deby Itno mentioned the loss of one soldier and injuries to two others during the confrontation, with the wounded receiving necessary medical attention. He emphasized Chad’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and continuing the pursuit of militant remnants. Boko Haram, a long-standing threat in the Lake Chad Basin, has caused significant human and material damage in the region over the years.
In a separate incident, five Boko Haram militants were killed while attempting an attack on a military camp in Cameroon’s Far North region in late February 2026.
