The 61st Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) began in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, with President Denis Sassou Nguesso in attendance. The theme of the meetings is “Mobilising Africa’s Development Financing at Scale in a Fragmented World,” gathering finance ministers, central bank governors, and various representatives from member countries and institutions. Ludovic Ngatse, chair of the AfDB Board of Governors, highlighted the significance of discussing the bank’s future financing priorities and adjusting its financial architecture.
AfDB Group President Sidi Ould Tah emphasized the importance of African leadership in driving the continent’s development. He stressed the need for African countries to enhance their financing structures and translate opportunities into concrete development outcomes. President Sassou Nguesso called for a more coordinated financing framework in critical sectors like infrastructure, education, health, and agriculture to advance African countries.
During the high-level discussions following the opening ceremony, leaders focused on infrastructure development and other pertinent issues. The meetings, scheduled until May 29, aim to explore strategies for maximizing Africa’s resources and youthful population to attract capital and enhance the continent’s financial standing in global markets amidst evolving global dynamics. Additionally, the AfDB will unveil the African Economic Outlook 2026 on the second day of the event.
