Abdominal or central obesity, as highlighted by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, presents a greater health risk compared to overall obesity, especially in the Indian population. Even individuals who appear lean may harbor harmful visceral fat around their abdomen, increasing the likelihood of severe health conditions. This fat distribution is linked to metabolic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and lipid imbalances.
Dr. Singh emphasized that central obesity, characterized by fat accumulation around the abdomen, is an independent risk factor contributing to various health issues. Despite the overall rise in obesity levels among both genders, abdominal obesity remains disproportionately high in India, significantly impacting cardiometabolic risk factors. Early detection and targeted interventions are crucial in addressing this concealed health threat.
The minister pointed out the influence of changing lifestyles, attributing the surge in metabolic disorders like type-2 diabetes and early heart-related complications among the youth to poor dietary choices, decreased physical activity, and disrupted daily routines. He cautioned against extreme or unscientific fitness practices, warning that excessive physical exertion without adequate preparation or rest can be detrimental to health. Dr. Singh stressed the significance of balanced living, ample sleep, and scientifically guided preventive healthcare measures.
The release of the cardiology textbook “Advances in Obesity and Lipid Management in CVD,” edited by renowned cardiologist H.K. Chopra and featuring contributions from over 300 experts globally, underscores advanced strategies for managing obesity and lipid disorders. The book delves into innovative therapies, digital tools, and the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Dr. Singh emphasized the timeliness of this publication as India grapples with a mounting burden of obesity-related ailments. He echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for enhanced public awareness and healthier lifestyle choices, including a reduction in the consumption of unhealthy foods.
