Trinamool Congress’ general secretary and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, is set to visit the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in West Bengal on Monday. This visit is related to an investigation concerning discrepancies in the signatures of the party’s MLAs for key positions in the West Bengal Assembly nominations.
Speculation surrounds Abhishek Banerjee’s upcoming appearance before the CID, following an incident of heckling and assault in Sonarpur, West Bengal. After two hospitals refused admission to Banerjee, his aunt, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, took him back to his residence in South Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee has arranged a “hospital-like facility” at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence for his treatment. The question remains whether Banerjee will attend the CID headquarters at Bhavani Bhavan, near his home, for questioning.
The CID issued an interrogation notice to Abhishek Banerjee on May 30, with officers delivering it to his Kalighat residence after an initial visit to his Harish Mukherjee Road home. Banerjee has expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigation with legal guidance.
The notice issued to Banerjee is reportedly linked to the CID’s probe into signature discrepancies of some Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution nominating key positions in the Assembly. Abhishek Banerjee had submitted the resolution nominating leaders, but mismatches in signatures led to CID involvement.
