Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for over three weeks, has announced that he will conclude his fast on Monday only if the three conditions specified in a letter from Safdarjung Hospital are met. Wangchuk, currently on his 23rd day of fasting, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, alleging “illegal detention” in a handwritten note he shared.
Addressing his supporters, Wangchuk stated that he would terminate his fast on July 20 if the government takes responsibility for recent education system failures and paper leaks. He also mentioned that he would end the strike if he and the leadership of CJP are assured by Members of Parliament and leaders of various parties that the issue will be raised in Parliament.
In the letter, Wangchuk outlined a third condition, expressing that if his health deteriorates or other circumstances arise, he would agree to end the fast if MPs and leaders from different political parties visit him at the hospital and provide assurances of raising the issue in Parliament. The activist’s protest aims to highlight significant flaws in India’s education system, particularly the issue of examination paper leaks, demanding the government to acknowledge responsibility and take corrective action.
Wangchuk’s health condition has garnered widespread public concern, with supporters hoping for his speedy recovery. The hospital has emphasized that his treatment is under careful supervision, reflecting the seriousness of his condition and the need for continuous monitoring. Wangchuk reiterated that his decision to end the hunger strike hinges on concrete assurances rather than mere verbal promises, vowing to continue his protest until the government accepts accountability for education system failures or elected representatives commit to addressing the issue in Parliament.
