Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, met with recognized National and State political parties in Guwahati to discuss preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections in 2026. The consultations aimed to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process in the state. The meeting also included the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam and senior officials from the Election Commission of India.
Representatives from various political parties, including national parties like AAP, BJP, CPI(M), and Congress, as well as state parties like AIUDF, AGP, BPF, and UPPL, participated in the discussions. During the meeting, many parties requested that the elections be held in a single phase or, at most, two phases for administrative ease and increased voter turnout. Some parties also suggested considering the Bihu festival while scheduling the election dates, given its cultural significance in Assam.
The political parties appreciated the Special Revision of the Electoral Rolls in Assam and commended the Election Commission for its efforts to enhance the electoral process. They raised concerns and provided suggestions regarding polling arrangements, security deployment, and other measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent election. The Election Commission assured the stakeholders that their inputs would be carefully reviewed and reiterated its commitment to conducting a fair, inclusive, and violence-free election, adhering to constitutional principles and the Model Code of Conduct.
