The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital achieved a significant milestone by completing its 250th deceased organ donation. This milestone was reached when the family of a 58-year-old man from West Bengal agreed to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead. The patient, Prasun Bhowmik, who resided in Ahmedabad for work, suffered a severe head injury at home and was later pronounced brain dead on July 26.
The hospital’s organ donation team, led by Dr. Mohit Champavat, counseled Bhowmik’s wife, Kshama, who ultimately consented to the organ donation despite the family’s grief. The donated organs, including one liver and two kidneys, will be used for life-saving transplants at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) on the Civil Medicity campus. This donation signifies a remarkable achievement for Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, a prominent public transplant center in Gujarat.
Praful Pansheriya, the Minister of State for Health, commended the hospital’s accomplishment, emphasizing the importance of organ donation. Praising the efforts under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s guidance, he highlighted the state government’s continuous endeavors to promote the message that ‘Organ Donation is the Greatest Donation.’ Dr. Rakesh Joshi, the Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, attributed the milestone to the increasing public awareness and trust in the organ donation program.
Dr. Joshi revealed that the hospital has received a total of 827 organs from 250 deceased donors, comprising various organs like livers, kidneys, pancreases, hearts, lungs, hands, and small intestines. Additionally, the hospital has recorded 198 eye donations and 48 skin donations, bringing the total number of donated organs and tissues to 1,073. Organ donation from brain-dead donors plays a crucial role in addressing the organ shortage in India, benefiting patients with end-stage organ failure who often face long waiting periods for suitable donors.
Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and IKDRC have emerged as key centers for deceased donor organ retrieval and transplantation in Gujarat. Through coordinated medical teams and donor family consent, they have facilitated multi-organ transplants, contributing significantly to the healthcare landscape in the region.
