The Ahmedabad Crime Branch uncovered an alleged illegal breeding and sale operation of exotic animals and birds in a residential flat in Navrangpura. Acting on specific intelligence, officers raided a flat at Ravalbhai Apartment and found a variety of foreign species being bred and kept in cages. The seized animals included a rare Red-handed Tamarin monkey baby, Persian cats, hamsters, rabbits, and various species of birds.
Officials noted that the animals seized, including African Grey Parrots, Blue and Gold Macaws, and Eclectus Parrots, are rare and highly valued in international markets. The accused presented documents through the government’s PARIVESH portal, which were deemed incomplete and suspicious by the Crime Branch. Keeping a large number of wild and exotic species in a densely populated residential area without proper biosecurity measures poses a significant public health risk.
Maintaining exotic animals in a residential setting without adequate biosecurity measures can lead to the spread of zoonotic diseases, endangering local residents. The use of a residential property for commercial breeding activities is a violation of regulations. The Forest Department, Municipal Corporation, and Customs Department will collaborate to verify document authenticity, legality of imports, and assess potential health risks through a detailed investigation.
