A total of 13.81 crore passenger journeys have been recorded on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network since its expansion in October 2022. The average daily ridership has increased to 1.53 lakh by May this year, with the Metro operating across a 68.28-km network with 54 stations. The project, initiated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance urban connectivity.
The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro has become a vital part of public transport in Gujarat’s largest urban corridor. It is a result of a vision to support planned urban development and improve connectivity between urban centers. The government emphasized the importance of a modern transport infrastructure for the progress, employment, and quality of life of citizens.
The Metro has been integrated with local transport systems, including the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, and Indian Railways. More than 200 buses provide last-mile connectivity for passengers passing through Metro stations. The ridership figures have shown consistent growth, with daily passenger numbers increasing steadily over the years.
“For the citizens of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the Metro has become a preferred option for fast, affordable, and reliable travel,” stated the government. The Metro has witnessed a surge in passenger traffic during major events like IPL matches and concerts. Expansion plans are in progress to meet the increasing urban transport demand, with proposed projects including new corridors and extensions.
