The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken steps to maintain water supply in the city due to repair work on the Narmada main canal. The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited is conducting pre-monsoon repairs on the canal lining, which will impact water availability for about 10 days. During this period, water levels in the canal will be adjusted, affecting the Kotarpur Water Works’ distribution capacity.
Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on the city’s water supply by adjusting water levels as needed. The Kotarpur Water Treatment Plant normally treats 1,100 million litres per day and supplies water to various zones in Ahmedabad. However, a shortfall of 50 to 60 MLD is expected during the repair period.
To address the anticipated shortfall, standby pumps at the raw water pump house have been activated, and borewells at water distribution stations will be utilized. The water supply system is being closely monitored to ensure equitable distribution based on available stock. Officials are striving to minimize inconvenience to citizens during this period and have urged residents to use water responsibly.
AMC’s repair work is part of routine pre-monsoon preparations to maintain the canal infrastructure’s functionality during the upcoming monsoon season.
