The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) gathered Rs 11.61 lakh in administrative fees in April as part of a food safety campaign. During this period, 2,153 food business units were inspected, 498 notices were issued, and 1,015 kg and 1,148 litres of unsafe food were destroyed. The Food Department, under the civic body’s Health Department, conducted inspections in various zones of the city from April 1 to April 30 to enforce the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
A total of 933 samples were collected from different food categories during the inspections. These samples included cold beverages, sugarcane juice, paneer, milk products, sweets, non-vegetarian products, bakery items, namkeen, pulses, flour, rice, grains, edible oil, spices, and others. Out of these samples, 40 were deemed substandard, leading to actions against the respective food business operators as per the law. Several establishments were sealed for violations such as lacking licenses, unhygienic conditions, presence of insects, and misrepresentation of food products.
Various food outlets faced closure due to violations discovered during the enforcement drive. For instance, Bhairavnath Punjabi Tadka, Punjab Di Mahak, Janata Mutton and Chicken Center, Shree Jalaram Parotha House, Vraj Dairy, and others were sealed for operating without licenses, using improper ingredients, and maintaining unhygienic conditions. The Health Department emphasized continuing inspections to ensure hygiene standards and compliance with licensing and registration requirements in the future.
