The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finished the initial phase of its pre-monsoon preparations by cleaning over 64,000 catchpits throughout the city. This initiative aims to prevent waterlogging and enhance drainage efficiency for the upcoming monsoon season. The AMC has conducted extensive cleaning and monitoring of catchpits and storm water manholes in all zones as part of its pre-monsoon action plan.
According to the AMC, Ahmedabad previously had 66,580 operational catchpits, with an additional 6,006 catchpits constructed recently, bringing the total count to 72,586 citywide. Data by zones revealed that the West Zone leads with 15,777 catchpits, followed by the North West Zone with 13,791 catchpits. The North Zone has 9,891 catchpits, East Zone 9,461, South Zone 9,093, South West Zone 7,601, and Central Zone 6,972.
In the initial phase, the AMC has cleaned 64,013 catchpits, with the West Zone accounting for 13,131 cleanings, North West Zone 11,032, North Zone 9,536, East Zone 8,990, South Zone 7,534, South West Zone 7,529, and Central Zone 6,261. The corporation emphasized the importance of regular monitoring and maintenance to ensure smooth rainwater flow and efficient storm water drainage.
A special campaign for storm water manholes has been launched by the AMC. The city previously had 24,004 operational manholes, with 2,681 new manholes added recently, totaling 26,685. The North West Zone holds the highest number of manholes at 7,465, followed by the East Zone with 4,731. The South West Zone, West Zone, South Zone, North Zone, and Central Zone also have varying numbers of manholes.
The AMC has committed to active monitoring and maintenance during the monsoon season to address waterlogging complaints promptly. The corporation has implemented continuous monitoring, pre-monsoon inspections, and special response plans to mitigate waterlogging issues and ensure efficient rainwater drainage.
