Ahmedabad has received approval for six urban infrastructure projects valued at Rs 2,719.80 crore under the Central government’s ‘Urban Challenge Fund’. These projects aim to modernize the city’s sewerage network, introduce intelligent water management systems, and integrate public transport services through a common digital platform. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned these projects as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to support urban transformation and regional development.
The approved projects include rehabilitation of the main sewerage networks in western and eastern Ahmedabad, along with old sewerage networks in different parts of the city. Additionally, funds have been allocated for an Intelligent Water Management System, an Integrated Sludge Management Facility, and an Integrated Transit Management System with an Automated Fare Collection System. These initiatives are expected to enhance the city’s infrastructure and promote sustainable practices.
The rehabilitation of Ahmedabad’s aging sewerage network is anticipated to reduce sewer overflows and leakages significantly. Moreover, the projects will enable real-time digital monitoring and smart management of the city’s sewerage and stormwater network. The Integrated Sludge Management Facility aims to convert sewage sludge into biogas and green energy, supporting environmentally friendly practices and a circular economy.
The Integrated Transit Management System and Automated Fare Collection System will integrate various transport services in Ahmedabad through a common mobility card and a single journey application. This system will provide real-time public transport information to passengers, facilitate AI-based route planning, and enhance incident management through modern surveillance. The projects are designed to enhance urban infrastructure, improve public services, and promote sustainable development in Ahmedabad.
