Doctors at AIIMS successfully conducted a complex medical procedure to save a 14-month-old girl’s life after she swallowed a 2-inch-long metal spring. The spring, stuck in her oesophagus, was safely removed through endoscopic surgery, as confirmed by AIIMS. The child, from Yamunanagar, was admitted to the hospital due to persistent vomiting and refusal to eat for two days.
Professor Dr. Vishesh Jain, from the Paediatric Surgery Department, highlighted the challenging nature of the case. Initially detected in an X-ray, the unusually large spring posed risks due to its size and location. Following a failed attempt at a private hospital, the child was referred to AIIMS for specialized care. Advanced endoscopic techniques were employed to carefully extract the spring without complications.
Post-surgery, the child’s condition significantly improved, allowing for oral feeding the next day. Dr. Jain emphasized the importance of childproofing environments by keeping small objects like springs, batteries, and coins out of children’s reach. Urging immediate medical attention if a child swallows a foreign object, he stressed the critical role of timely intervention in such cases.
