Amanda Anisimova has pulled out of the Italian Open because of a left wrist injury, prolonging her absence from the clay-court season. Ranked sixth globally, she was set to play against Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, but her withdrawal has led to lucky loser Elena Gabriela Ruse entering the main draw. Anisimova, aged 24, has not competed since the hard-court series earlier this year, missing events like the Charleston Open and the Madrid Open due to wrist issues.
Anisimova’s recent participation was at the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, where she made it to the Round of 16 in both tournaments. Following Miami, she announced the end of her coaching collaboration with Hendrik Vleeshouwers, expressing gratitude for their shared successes. Despite a commendable 11-6 record this season, including a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open and a semifinal run in Dubai, Anisimova has played only six tour-level matches since then.
The withdrawal of Anisimova adds to the list of players pulling out of the Rome event, with Marta Kostyuk also recently withdrawing due to a right hip injury. Kostyuk, after a successful period in her career, cited a hip issue and an ongoing ankle problem as reasons for her decision. Additionally, Emma Raducanu withdrew from the tournament earlier due to a post-viral illness, further impacting the competition.
