Shocking details have surfaced regarding the rape of an American tourist in India. The victim reported that the accused, Vrijesh Kumar, allegedly drugged her and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. Following the assault, the homestay owner reportedly prevented her from seeking help for three days.
The American tourist, visiting India, was staying at Devi Villa Homestay in Kutta village when the incident occurred. Vrijesh Kumar, a man from Jharkhand, allegedly spiked her drink with a sedative and assaulted her. The victim’s complaint detailed the sexual assault that took place after she lost consciousness.
According to the complaint, the homestay owner, Vishal, tried to conceal the incident upon discovering it. He allegedly restricted the victim from contacting anyone for three days and even cut off the homestay’s Wi-Fi access. After three days, the victim informed them that she was heading to Mysuru and managed to escape the situation.
Upon reaching Mysuru, the woman contacted the American Embassy and reported the harrowing incident. Embassy officials then contacted authorities in Mysuru via email, prompting the registration of a case at a local police station. Ministry of External Affairs officials from Delhi and Chennai visited Kodagu following the incident.
In response, both the rape accused and the homestay owner have been apprehended in connection with the case. They have been remanded to judicial custody until May 3. The Superintendent of Police for the district mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, with further details pending disclosure at this stage.
Karnataka’s Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, revealed that there were efforts to suppress the case, but law enforcement thwarted these attempts. He emphasized the importance of taking appropriate action in such cases and ensuring that homestay operators adhere to licensing regulations and standard operating procedures.
Parameshwara stressed the significance of upholding the law and addressing incidents that tarnish the state and society’s image, especially when involving foreigners. He highlighted the necessity of strict enforcement and the government’s commitment to taking decisive action in such situations.
