Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the people of Assam for passing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) legislation, which standardizes laws on marriage, divorce, inheritance, and more for all residents. The BJP-led government in Assam, under Himanta Biswa Sarma, successfully enacted the UCC bill, becoming the third state, following Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to implement such a law. Despite opposition demands, the bill was swiftly passed in the State Assembly.
Amit Shah commended Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the legislators for their support in passing the UCC bill, emphasizing the BJP’s commitment to this cause since its inception. The UCC, a significant BJP electoral promise in Assam, was approved by the state cabinet earlier this month, aiming to ensure legal uniformity in civil matters like marriage and inheritance. The legislation prohibits bigamy and polygamy while mandating the registration of live-in relationships.
Highlighting the importance of equality before the law, Amit Shah reiterated the Modi government’s dedication to establishing uniform civil laws nationwide. Chief Minister Himanta Sarma hailed the passage of the UCC bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly as a historic milestone, thanking all members for their support. The bill is now set to be forwarded to the Governor of Assam and subsequently to the President of India for final approval.
