Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a review of the nation’s readiness to tackle potential floods and heatwaves. He instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to investigate the adherence of states to guidelines for managing forest fires, heatwaves, and floods. Shah emphasized the need for an early warning system for 30 high-risk lakes across several states.
Shah advocated for an integrated flood forecasting system at both central and state levels. He proposed the formation of Flood Crisis Management Teams (FCMTs) in every state. The Home Minister highlighted the importance of ensuring compliance with disaster guidelines at various administrative levels to enhance their effectiveness.
During the meeting, Shah stressed the importance of states following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs and NDMA guidelines regarding natural disasters. He urged the NDMA to evaluate the implementation of these directives. The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan.
Shah underscored the need to work towards achieving Zero Casualty Disaster Management under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He encouraged exploring water conservation and groundwater improvement through projects like water storage and check dams. Shah also recommended utilizing the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority Fund for environmental balance initiatives.
