India’s largest dairy cooperative, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has announced an increase of Rs two per litre in the prices of Amul fresh milk nationwide, effective from May 14. This price hike, ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 percent, applies to various Amul milk variants and packs sold across the country. The federation clarified that this increase is below the average food inflation rate.
The decision to raise prices was attributed to the escalating input costs faced by the 36 lakh milk producers associated with the federation. Factors such as the rising prices of cattle feed, milk packaging film, and fuel over the past year have led to this adjustment. Additionally, member unions have raised payments to farmers by Rs 30 per kilogram of fat, marking a 3.7 percent increase from the previous year.
Under the revised pricing structure, consumers in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Saurashtra, and Kutch, will see changes in the rates of various Amul milk products. For instance, a 500 ml pouch of Amul Taaza will now cost Rs 29, up from Rs 28, while the one-litre pack will be priced at Rs 57 instead of Rs 55. Similarly, Amul Cow Milk and Amul Shakti will also witness price adjustments for their 500 ml packs.
The last price revision for Amul milk was on April 30, 2025, with the new rates taking effect from May 1, 2025. This earlier adjustment, where prices were increased by Rs 2 per litre, was justified by the federation due to heightened production and operational expenses. Notably, the federation had refrained from raising fresh pouch milk prices since June 2024.
