The Andaman and Nicobar Administration is striving to transform the archipelago into a top-notch scuba diving destination. A presentation was recently given to Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd), the Lieutenant Governor of the islands, focusing on discovering new dive sites and underwater attractions. Discussions included plans for artificial reefs, shipwreck dives, and marine-themed installations at various locations like North Bay, Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Long Island, and Aves Island to enhance sustainable tourism and conserve natural reefs.
Representatives from local diving institutes, along with administrative officials, attended the meeting to support these initiatives. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands boast crystal-clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and intriguing shipwrecks, making it a paradise for scuba diving enthusiasts.
Diving enthusiasts visiting the islands can enjoy a range of experiences, from leisurely reef dives to thrilling volcanic-wall dives, encountering marine wonders like manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, and colorful fish. Even beginners can explore the underwater world with expert guidance after basic training.
Popular diving spots in the Andamans include Elephant Beach and The Wall at Havelock, the coral gardens of Neil Island, and the remote underwater volcano at Barren Island. The region offers exceptional visibility, warm waters, and a rich biodiversity, making it an enticing destination for divers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.
Efforts are underway to attract more international tourists to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reducing the need for domestic travelers to seek scuba diving experiences abroad. Plans are in place to improve infrastructure catering to various budgets, with ongoing and upcoming developments aimed at boosting the local economy.
