The Great Nicobar Island Development Project (GNIDP) has been approved by the government, aiming to turn the Andaman & Nicobar Islands into a significant gateway for India. This ambitious project envisions the transformation of Great Nicobar Island into a sustainable, green hub for business, trade, and leisure, featuring a transhipment port, an international airport, a township, and a power plant.
Situated near key maritime routes like the Six Degree Channel and the Strait of Malacca, the Great Nicobar Island is poised to become a crucial transhipment hub for India. The project includes plans for a Greenfield International Airport capable of handling 4,000 passengers per hour and a power plant with a capacity of 450 MVA to support various facilities.
The GNIDP marks a significant step in integrating national security goals with regional economic development in the Bay of Bengal. With its strategic location just 40 nautical miles from major shipping routes, the island is strategically positioned to enhance India’s economic and security interests in the region.
The project also emphasizes environmental sustainability by preserving a significant portion of the affected forest area and undertaking extensive tree planting initiatives. Additionally, measures are in place to ensure the safety and preservation of local tribes, with a focus on minimal disruption to their habitats.
