With Andhra Pradesh facing intense heat wave conditions, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed local authorities to declare holidays in severely affected areas based on the prevailing weather. He emphasized the need for officials to be vigilant and take immediate actions to safeguard the public from the extreme heat. The Chief Minister directed the identification of regions with the highest temperatures for issuing continuous warnings and advisories to residents.
Officials reported to the Chief Minister that the heat wave severity had escalated due to intense El Niño conditions. Comparing the current situation to the severe El Niño year of 2015, where temperatures peaked at 50.1 degrees Celsius, this year has also seen temperatures soaring as high as 48 degrees Celsius. Over the past three days, temperatures have surged from 45 degrees Celsius to 48 degrees Celsius.
Highlighting the significance of enhancing greenery statewide, the Chief Minister linked increased green cover to improved groundwater levels, which aid in reducing the impact of extreme temperatures. He cited Annamayya district as a model, noting its relatively lower temperatures compared to other districts. Stressing on public relief measures, he urged the provision of drinking water, buttermilk, and ORS packets at public places and gatherings.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives, the Chief Minister advised the public to take precautions during peak heat hours. He specifically urged vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with health issues to avoid outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Additionally, he instructed officials to heighten awareness on heat wave safety measures and ensure continuous dissemination of information through various media platforms.
