Social activist Anna Hazare has called on the Centre to engage in discussions with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was hospitalized at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital due to health deterioration after a 20-day hunger strike. Hazare emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding in resolving issues, stating that solutions can only be found through peaceful talks.
Hazare stressed the need for efforts to resolve disputes through mutual consent to foster societal unity. He highlighted that prolonged conflicts without dialogue would not lead to effective solutions. Notably, Hazare had previously led a 13-day hunger strike in 2011, known as the “India Against Corruption” movement, which resulted in the formation of a joint drafting committee for the Lokpal Bill by the then Congress-led UPA government.
Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak, was part of a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Safdarjung Hospital provided an update on Wangchuk’s condition, indicating signs of dehydration, compensated acidosis, low serum potassium, and other health issues, despite his refusal of medical intervention.
Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, requested the hospital to expedite discharge procedures for his transfer to a medical facility chosen by the family, citing concerns about the transparency of his treatment.
