Filmmaker Anurag Basu has expressed his solidarity with director Honey Trehan, whose film ‘Satluj’ was removed from an OTT platform. Anurag compared Trehan’s situation to that of Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who has faced severe state censorship and house arrest. ‘Satluj’ was taken down due to its sensitive content, but the platform affirmed its support for the film despite pausing its availability in India.
Actor Ranvir Shorey also lamented the removal of ‘Satluj,’ emphasizing the importance of preserving stories in a culture rich with history and storytelling traditions. The film, previously named ‘Punjab 95,’ delves into human rights violations by the Punjab police during an insurgency. Directed by Honey Trehan, the movie portrays a man’s quest for truth amidst fear and silence, shedding light on the tragic reality of disappearances and the struggle for justice.
The storyline of ‘Satluj’ is inspired by human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who fought against police brutality and was allegedly killed to suppress the truth. The film exposes the harsh truths of a turbulent period marked by conflict and injustice, highlighting the sacrifices made by families seeking accountability and closure.
