Aqil Khan Obaid has stepped in for Hafieezullah Zadran in Afghanistan’s U19 World Cup squad due to Zadran’s wrist fracture sustained during a match against South Africa. The ICC approved Obaid as Zadran’s replacement after the injury rendered Zadran unable to continue playing in the tournament. Afghanistan secured their spot in the U19 World Cup after winning the Asia Qualifier last year.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 sanctioned Aqil Khan Obaid as the replacement for Hafieezullah Zadran in the Afghanistan squad. Zadran’s left wrist fracture, incurred during the opening match against South Africa, led to his withdrawal from the tournament. Afghanistan’s qualification for the U19 World Cup came after a successful unbeaten run in the Asia Qualifier, narrowly surpassing Nepal based on Net Run Rate.

Afghanistan’s U19 World Cup journey began with a victory over South Africa, and they are set to play against the West Indies next. Uzairullah Niazai’s notable performance in previous matches has been crucial for the team. The tournament, which started on January 15, will see Afghanistan facing Tanzania in their final group-stage match on January 21.
