AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi kicked off his campaign for the Assembly elections in West Bengal by addressing a rally in Murshidabad district in support of Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). Owaisi accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having a political understanding during a public meeting in Naoda, alleging collaboration between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. He highlighted the increase in BJP MLAs’ strength in Bengal from 3 in 2016 to 77 in 2021, questioning the reasons behind this surge.
Owaisi’s party has formed an electoral alliance with Kabir’s AJUP for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Criticizing the Trinamool Congress for its alleged failure to protect poor Muslims and Dalits and provide adequate welfare measures, Owaisi expressed support for Kabir as a leader chosen by the people. He pledged to assist onion farmers through cold storage and agro-industries if their alliance emerges victorious in Murshidabad and other districts.
Addressing the minority community members, Owaisi emphasized the importance of having strong leadership to ensure their voices are heard and not suppressed. Kabir, present at the rally, challenged Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s recent rally at Naoda, expressing confidence in his own candidacy and daring his opponents to defeat him by a significant margin. Kabir, in alliance with AIMIM, criticized the Trinamool Congress government for alleged corruption and vowed to contest the elections under his leadership.
