Regional stability was reinforced by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025 despite facing challenges, as per Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar highlighted the collective wisdom and sincerity of ASEAN and its partners in maintaining unity and bridging gaps. Malaysia handed over the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines for 2026 after concluding its term, marking the fifth time Malaysia has served as ASEAN chair since 1967.
The Foreign Ministers of ASEAN member countries held a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur to address tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. They urged both nations to exercise restraint and cease hostilities to ensure regional peace and security. The meeting emphasized the importance of ASEAN unity and solidarity in maintaining peace, security, and prosperity in the region, expressing concerns over the ongoing tensions and hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand.
Efforts were made during the meeting to facilitate the return of civilians affected by the border conflict to their homes safely and with dignity. Both Cambodia and Thailand were urged to restore mutual trust, engage in dialogue, and uphold international law principles for a peaceful resolution. Malaysia, under Anwar’s leadership as ASEAN Chair, played a role in encouraging both nations to de-escalate hostilities, with Cambodia and Thailand presenting their positions during the meeting.
