Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia opposed the bail plea of festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, the main accused in the investigation of musician Zubeen Garg’s death. The Gauhati High Court and a Fast Track Court both denied Mahanta’s bail requests in the high-profile case that stirred public outcry in Assam. Saikia highlighted seven crucial reasons to the media for rejecting the bail plea, including concerns about potential evidence tampering.
Deleted data from Mahanta’s phone was recovered during the investigation, according to Saikia, who also alleged that Mahanta had instructed Garg’s bandmate on what statements to make. The prosecution argued strongly against bail, fearing the accused might flee if released. The court, considering these factors, refused bail and allowed the investigation to proceed. The case has sparked a social media campaign demanding justice for Zubeen Garg.
The investigation revolves around the death of Zubeen Garg, who passed away while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore. A Special Investigation Team filed a chargesheet naming seven individuals, four of whom face murder charges. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma labeled the case as a “plain and simple murder,” emphasizing the government’s position. Despite Singapore Police finding no foul play, Assam authorities maintain the foreign probe won’t impact the local trial, which continues to attract public and political attention.
