Assam is set to experience widespread rainfall in the next five days, as per the India Meteorological Department’s forecast. Moderate rain is expected across most parts of the state, with warnings issued for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati predicts moderate rain in many areas of Assam during this period, with heavy rain likely at specific locations on multiple days.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are anticipated at isolated places, leading authorities to advise caution, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas. The prevailing weather conditions are attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Assam and adjoining Nagaland, along with an active monsoon trough extending across northern India towards the northeast Bay of Bengal. In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rain was observed in most parts of Assam, with heavy to very heavy rainfall recorded at isolated spots in Kamrup (Metro), Golaghat, and Dhubri districts.
Heavy rainfall was also reported in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Biswanath, and Nagaon districts. Notable rainfall figures during this period include 20 cm in Pandu (Kamrup Metro), 17 cm in Kukurmara Mirza (Kamrup), and 14 cm at Guwahati Airport. Additionally, Bokakhat and Golaghat each received 13 cm, while Agomani and Kamakhya saw 12 cm of rainfall. Authorities warn that the ongoing rain spell could worsen flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable districts already grappling with rising river levels.
Disaster management agencies are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to heed weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall periods. The IMD cautions the public to stay vigilant for localized flooding, reduced visibility, lightning strikes, and disruptions to road traffic as the wet weather persists throughout the week.
