Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed a significant development in the Zubeen Garg death case investigation. A dedicated fast-track court will now conduct daily hearings to ensure swift justice. The move is seen as a crucial step towards expediting the judicial process and avoiding delays that often hinder high-profile criminal trials.
CM Sarma shared that Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Gauhati High Court has appointed Sharmila Bhuyan, the District Judge in Baksa, to preside over the exclusive fast-track sessions court. This initiative aims to streamline trial proceedings and uphold the commitment to timely justice. The government’s focus is on strengthening the rule of law and ensuring accountability in such cases.
Expressing gratitude to the Gauhati High Court and Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of this decisive action. The establishment of a special fast-track court underscores the authorities’ dedication to expediting the legal process and delivering justice promptly. The development is a significant stride towards reinforcing the judicial system’s efficiency and responsiveness.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police, under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), had filed an extensive charge sheet in a Guwahati court in December 2025 regarding Garg’s death. The case stemmed from the singer’s tragic demise in Singapore on September 19, 2025, during a sea outing at the North East India Festival. The charge sheet, comprising thousands of pages based on thorough investigations and witness testimonies, highlighted the gravity of the case.
In the charge sheet, seven individuals were named, with murder charges filed against four, including the festival organizer, Garg’s manager, a band member, and a co-singer. Garg’s cousin, a suspended Assam Police officer, faced charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Other accused individuals, including Garg’s security personnel, were implicated in offenses like criminal conspiracy and breach of trust. The development is expected to bring solace to Garg’s family and supporters, who have been advocating for swift court proceedings in the case.
