Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that a sudden surge of floodwaters upstream has led to extensive damage in villages near Jonai, Dhemaji district. Over 45,000 individuals have been affected across seven districts in Assam due to the worsening flood situation. Villages like Madhupur, Arun Chapori, Jamuguri Siyari, Uluwani, Majgaon, and Malan have been severely impacted by flash floods.
The Chief Minister shared images of the affected areas on social media, highlighting the dire situation caused by the sudden rise in floodwaters. The state government has mobilized teams on the ground to prioritize the safety of the affected people. Sarma emphasized that ensuring the well-being of the populace is the primary focus at this time.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that 45,839 individuals have been affected in districts including Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, and Nalbari. Floodwaters have submerged 257 villages and approximately 4,279 hectares of cropland, with Dhemaji district bearing the brunt of the impact, affecting over 41,000 people.
Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administrations are ongoing. So far, 157 individuals and 68 animals have been evacuated. The floods have caused damage to public infrastructure, including the destruction of nine houses, erosion of 16 roads, four bridges, and an embankment. A bridge in Kemi, Dhemaji, was washed away, disrupting connectivity in the region.
Authorities have set up 12 relief camps and distribution centers, accommodating 655 displaced individuals. Additionally, relief aid is being extended to more than 36,800 people outside the camps. The state government continues to monitor the evolving flood situation and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
