Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused the Congress of allowing large-scale encroachment of forest land during its rule in the state. Sarma stated that over 2.87 lakh hectares of forest land were illegally occupied due to the Congress party’s inaction. He highlighted his government’s efforts in halting this practice through eviction and reclamation initiatives.
Sarma emphasized that the BJP-led government in Assam has successfully reclaimed more than 20,000 hectares of forest land since initiating eviction drives. He underscored the importance of protecting the environment and enforcing the law through these actions. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to preventing further illegal occupation of forest areas.
The Chief Minister stressed that forest encroachments have not only disrupted Assam’s ecological balance but also fueled illegal activities and endangered wildlife habitats. He outlined the government’s focus on restoring forest land, safeguarding biodiversity, and ensuring sustainable environmental management in the state. Sarma defended the eviction drives, stating they are carried out within legal boundaries and in the public interest.
Sarma affirmed that the government’s goal is to preserve Assam’s natural heritage and ecological security for future generations. He mentioned ongoing efforts to reclaim all encroached forest land as part of this broader vision. The issue of forest land encroachment has sparked political debate in Assam, with opposition parties raising humanitarian concerns while the BJP defends the measures for environmental conservation and lawful governance.
