Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the initiation of ‘Mission Senehjori’ in collaboration with the Centre to enhance the traditional Muga silk sector in Assam. This project, valued at over Rs 400 crore, aims to support farmers and weavers involved in the Muga silk craft by creating a conducive ecosystem for production and marketing. The mission intends to establish 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) and 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) across the state to strengthen the industry.
The Chief Minister emphasized the significance of ‘Mission Senehjori’ in empowering weavers and ensuring market access through digital traceability systems and Geographical Indication (GI) authentication measures. By implementing these mechanisms, the authenticity of Assam’s Muga silk products and handicrafts can be verified by global buyers. Sarma highlighted the collaborative efforts of the State and Central governments to promote Assam’s traditional craftsmanship internationally, including in markets like the Gulf region and Japan.
Sarma praised Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for his continuous support to the Northeast region and expressed optimism that such initiatives would not only preserve Assam’s heritage industries but also create sustainable livelihoods for artisans and rural communities.
