Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that Assam is becoming a significant logistics and cargo hub in the Northeast. The Guwahati Airport saw a notable 15.1% year-on-year increase in cargo handling during the financial year 2025-26. Sarma highlighted Assam’s crucial role in regional trade and connectivity, positioning the state as a logistics powerhouse supporting industrial growth and business expansion.
Cargo handling at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport rose from 29,155 metric tonnes in 2024-25 to 33,555.99 metric tonnes in 2025-26, as per data shared by Sarma. This growth signifies the rising demand for efficient freight movement and enhanced supply chain infrastructure in Assam. The Chief Minister emphasized that the surge in cargo traffic reflects Assam’s expanding economic activities and its increasing integration with both domestic and international markets.
Assam’s government has been actively investing in transport infrastructure, multimodal connectivity, and export-oriented initiatives to strengthen the state’s logistics ecosystem. The focus is on improving road, rail, inland waterway, and air connectivity to facilitate the movement of goods across the Northeast and neighboring regions. The increased cargo volumes at Guwahati Airport are seen as a positive sign of growing business confidence, higher transportation of agricultural and industrial goods, and the strategic significance of Assam as a gateway to Southeast Asia under India’s Act East policy.
The recent growth in cargo handling aligns with the state government’s initiatives to attract investments, boost manufacturing, and create job opportunities through infrastructure-driven progress. Officials believe that enhancing cargo-handling capacity will be pivotal in realizing Assam’s vision of becoming a key trade and logistics center in the region.
