Continuing their crackdown on illegal medical activities, Assam Police in Cachar district have apprehended Shamim Ahmed Laskar for practicing medicine with forged qualifications. Laskar, a resident of Bhaga area, was operating a medical chamber without valid credentials, leading to his arrest following a complaint by Dr Abhijit Neog, the Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration.
Acting on the complaint, a police team raided Laskar’s chamber and found several fake MBBS certificates and related documents. Investigations revealed that Laskar had been deceiving patients by illegally practicing medicine, posing a significant risk to public health and safety. He lacked proper registration or authorization for medical practice, prompting a detailed probe into the extent of his illicit activities and potential harm caused to patients.
The authorities suspect a broader network involved in producing or circulating counterfeit medical certificates and do not rule out further arrests. This arrest is part of Assam Police’s intensified efforts against quackery and unqualified medical practitioners in Cachar district, with around 20 such individuals already apprehended in recent months. Officials urge the public to verify medical practitioners’ credentials and report any suspicious activities to prevent risks associated with unqualified medical practices.
