Guwahati, Aug 18 (IANS) Assam Police seized 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 10 crore from a truck in Cachar district, in another major success in the state’s continuing crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.

Taking to X, Sarma praised the Cachar Police and Assam Police for the operation, using wordplay to highlight the seizure. “Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. So did this drug haul. Good job @cacharpolice and @assampolice,” the Chief Minister posted.

The narcotics were recovered during an operation at the Old MVI Check Point in Digharkhal locality in Cachar district, where police intercepted a truck and detected a secret chamber allegedly being used to conceal the contraband.

According to Sarma, 50,000 Yaba tablets, with an estimated value of Rs 10 crore, were seized from the hidden compartment. One person has been apprehended in connection with the seizure.

The latest recovery adds to a series of major anti-narcotics operations carried out by Assam Police, particularly in Cachar and other districts bordering the northeastern drug-trafficking routes.

In recent months, Cachar has emerged as a major focus of enforcement operations against the trafficking of Yaba and other narcotic substances.

In August, Assam Police and Assam Rifles jointly seized around 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin valued at more than Rs 28 crore in Cachar, arresting three alleged traffickers.

Earlier in July, a joint operation involving Assam Police, Assam Rifles and district police units in Cachar and Hailakandi led to the seizure of 80,000 Yaba tablets valued at nearly Rs 8 crore and the arrest of two persons.

In June, Cachar Police also seized 29,200 suspected Yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 2.9 crore and arrested one person in Silchar.

The repeated seizures have underscored Assam’s intensified efforts to disrupt narcotics supply networks operating through the Northeast.

Sarma has repeatedly maintained that the state government will continue its campaign against the drug trade and work towards making Assam a drug-free state.

The latest operation also highlights the use of concealed compartments and other methods by traffickers to transport narcotics, while police have stepped up intelligence-based checking and inter-agency operations to intercept such consignments.

Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the seized tablets and identify other members of the trafficking network.
