The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Mizoram Police, confiscated methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 38.78 crore in two separate operations, leading to the arrest of three drug peddlers, including a Myanmar national. In the initial operation, 3.46 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at about Rs 10.40 crore were recovered from Zokhawthar in Champhai district, near the Myanmar border. The seized drugs were handed over to the Zokhawthar police station for further investigation.
In a subsequent operation, 9.462 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 28.386 crore were seized by the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police during a vehicle search at the Melbuk Gate area of the World Bank Road in the same region. Two Indian nationals and one Myanmar national were apprehended in this operation, and all seized items were transferred to the Zokhawthar police station for legal proceedings.
The successful operations underscore the ongoing efforts of the Assam Rifles and local law enforcement in combating drug trafficking and ensuring security along Mizoram’s border areas. These actions are part of the Assam Rifles’ sustained initiatives to prevent illegal activities and maintain peace in the region. Methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba, are a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine and are frequently misused as high-dosage drugs in Bangladesh and neighboring regions.
Mizoram’s geographical features, including its unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, make it susceptible to cross-border smuggling activities. The state’s strategic location has made it a target for trafficking various illicit goods, including narcotics and arms. Methamphetamine tablets, due to their addictive and harmful nature, are strictly prohibited in India.
