Assam Rifles personnel in Mizoram seized a significant amount of Myanmar currency, tobacco products, and foreign cigarettes. The operation, based on specific intelligence, led to the arrest of a Myanmar national involved in smuggling activities. The seized items included Kyat 1.75 crore in Myanmar currency, smuggled tobacco valued at Rs 50,000, and foreign cigarettes worth Rs 1.30 lakh.
A mobile vehicle check post in the Tuipang area of Siaha district was instrumental in intercepting a truck carrying the contraband. The arrested individual, identified as U. Phyu Maung, aged 37 and from Rakhine state in Myanmar, was handed over to the Tuipang Police Station for legal proceedings. This incident follows a similar interception on January 16, where Assam Rifles seized Kyat 1,40,82,000 in Myanmar currency and apprehended another individual in the same district.
Mizoram, sharing borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, faces challenges in curbing smuggling activities. The region, especially Chin state in Myanmar, serves as a significant route for drug and contraband trafficking into Mizoram. The authorities are vigilant in combating such illegal activities to maintain security along the borders.
