The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has raised concerns over Gauhati University’s decision to allocate Rs 2.08 crore for constructing a VIP dining room, kitchen, and staff quarters. AASU President Utpal Sarma emphasized the need for prioritizing academic necessities over non-essential projects during financial constraints. Sarma highlighted that while infrastructure development is important, academic activities should not be compromised due to extravagant spending.
Sarma disclosed that the tender notice for the project has been made public, with the contract already awarded. The project, as per the tender document, includes building a Guest House VIP Dining Room, Kitchen, and Staff Quarters at the estimated cost. The AASU leader expressed willingness to support substantial investments in university facilities if academic functions remain unaffected and financial resources are sufficient.
According to Sarma, Gauhati University should concentrate on enhancing educational infrastructure, upgrading academic amenities, and ensuring ample funding for students and faculty before embarking on projects catering to VIP hospitality. He criticized the university for prioritizing a guest house kitchen and VIP dining facility over critical academic needs amid financial difficulties. Sarma has notified the Assam government’s Education Department about this issue and urged a review of the expenditure’s appropriateness considering the university’s financial state.
