Aston Villa secured their first European trophy in 44 years by clinching the UEFA Europa League title with a convincing victory over Freiburg. This victory marks Villa as the 31st different winner of the tournament and the sixth from England. Notably, this win also makes Villa the third new victor in the last six seasons, following Atalanta in 2023/24 and Emery’s Villarreal in 2020/21.
Emery has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first coach to win the UEFA Europa League with three different teams, all of which have ‘villa’ in their name: Sevilla (three times), Villarreal, and now Villa. Freiburg, on the other hand, had aspirations of securing their first major title in the club’s history, while Villa was aiming to end a 30-year silverware drought.
The match started tentatively with both teams showing signs of nerves in the vibrant atmosphere at the Beşiktaş Park. However, Villa’s Youri Tielemans broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute with a brilliant volley from a Morgan Rogers cross. Just before halftime, Emiliano Buendía extended Villa’s lead with a spectacular goal from outside the box.
Villa continued their dominance in the second half, with Buendía setting up Morgan Rogers for their third goal. Despite a close chance hitting the post, Villa settled for a 3-0 victory. Freiburg fought hard but fell short, looking to regroup in the upcoming Conference League play-offs next season.
