Arizona State University’s London campus is offering Indian students visa-flexible degree pathways, scholarships, and two-country academic programs as US visa delays and stricter H-1B rules create growing uncertainty for students seeking American education.
ASU London unveiled programs in New Delhi offering Indian students alternative pathways including UK-accredited bachelor’s degrees with guaranteed US master’s transitions, USD 6,743.78 scholarships, and flexible online learning options amid 10-month US visa appointment backlogs and declining Indian student enrollment in American universities.
US Visa Delays Drive ASU London Expansion in India
Arizona State University launched its ASU London initiative in New Delhi, directly addressing visa processing challenges facing Indian students. The program offers visa-flexible academic models, scholarships, and hybrid learning options as alternatives to traditional US-based education.
Chris Howard, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Arizona State University, acknowledged the visa challenges during the announcement. “When students apply to ASU, we do the best we can to prepare them to be successful in the visa process. We don’t make that decision. That’s made by government entities,” Howard told BW Education.
ASU allows students to start programs online if visa approvals are delayed and begin their education through partner institutions, ensuring academic continuity amid regulatory disruptions.
ASU London introduced a two-country academic pathway allowing qualified Indian students to pursue a UK-accredited bachelor’s degree, followed by a guaranteed transition to a master’s degree at Arizona State University in the US.
Two-country degree structure:
- UK-accredited bachelor’s degree at ASU London
- Guaranteed transition to ASU master’s program in US
- Two degrees in two countries within four years
- Combination of British academic rigor with American applied learning
- Over 400 bachelor’s programs available
The programs span business and management, computer science, engineering, and technology disciplines. This structure provides Indian students with international credentials while navigating US visa uncertainties.
Scholarships and Financial Support for Indian Students
ASU is offering a USD 6,743.78 scholarship for eligible students, featured in the ASU London brochure. Howard confirmed the scholarship availability and encouraged early applications to secure funding.
Financial support options:
- USD 6,743.78 scholarship for eligible students
- Expanding financing options across US, UK, and India
- India-focused education loan pathways
- Loan options specifically for students studying in UK
ASU operates with estimated funding of USD 5.4 billion, with USD 1 billion in projected research expenditure for FY26. The university serves nearly 200,000 degree-seeking students and supports over 500,000 learners globally through lifelong learning, certifications, and upskilling programs.
Indian student enrollment in US universities plunged by nearly 75 percent during the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term. The decline stems from intensified visa scrutiny, constrained interview availability, and growing uncertainty around post-study employment prospects.
According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Centre, international student enrollment dropped by close to 5,000 during the period. While overall enrollment in US institutions increased by 1 percent, foreign student numbers declined in the Fall intake for the first time in three years.
Multi-country education models and flexible learning options are increasingly viewed as viable solutions, offering continuity, global exposure, and greater career certainty in a volatile international education environment.
US Visa Appointment Backlogs Affecting Indian Applicants
US visa appointment wait times stretch up to 10 months for B1/B2 categories, with backlogs reported across Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. These delays leave thousands of Indian applicants uncertain about travel, study, and employment timelines.
Current visa processing challenges:
- Wait times up to 10 months for B1/B2 visa categories
- Backlogs in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad
- Enhanced social media screening introduced December 15
- Increased scrutiny of applicants’ online activity
- H-1B stamping appointments pushed to 2027 in some cases
During the winter Parliament session, MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh cited US State Department data highlighting unprecedented delays in visa processing. Singh confirmed India is engaging with US authorities to expedite approvals, noting that “the US visa process, though challenging, remains a sovereign matter.”
H-1B Visa Changes Impact Indian Professionals and Students
The US H-1B visa regime has seen tighter rules, higher costs, and growing unpredictability since late 2025. India accounts for around 72 percent of H-1B visa holders based on last year’s figures, making appointment delays and policy uncertainty a major concern.
H-1B visa developments:
- India represents approximately 72% of H-1B visa holders
- USD 100,000 H-1B visa fee announced September 19, 2025
- Interview dates pushed to 2027 in some cases
- Reports of stricter scrutiny and documentation requirements
- No blanket policy reversal announced
These changes complicate planning for Indian professionals and students exploring post-study work pathways in the United States.
Flexible Academic Routes and Online Learning Options
Rick Shangraw, President of Cintana Education, emphasized that ASU London offers hybrid and flexible academic routes for students facing visa, financial, or personal constraints.
“If US visas are delayed, students can complete one year online, remain in London, return to India, or continue remotely, while still earning an ASU-accredited degree. The keyword today is options,” Shangraw told BW Education.
Flexible learning pathways:
- Complete first year online if visa delayed
- Study remotely from India while earning ASU degree
- Remain in London for UK-based programs
- Transition to US campus when visa approved
- Hybrid learning models combining online and in-person education
Shangraw noted that the US has extended the student visa application window to 365 days, allowing earlier planning and preparation. “Applying as early as possible for interviews helps the process,” he said.
AI Ethics Integration Across ASU Programs
When asked about ethics concerns in artificial intelligence after Grok AI faced criticism for misuse, Shangraw said ethics in AI is being embedded across disciplines including business, engineering, science, and humanities.
“AI permeates every discipline, and ethics has to be taught alongside it,” Shangraw told BW Education. This approach ensures students understand responsible AI development and deployment regardless of their academic specialization.
In his keynote address, Howard described ASU as a “public enterprise,” blending the strengths of a public university, private organization, government institution, and startup. This hybrid model supports ASU’s global expansion strategy including online programs, partner institutions, and the London campus.
Shangraw confirmed that visa challenges remain a shared concern for universities, students, and parents worldwide. “We spent time at the US Embassy today talking about visas because it’s a concern to parents and students globally,” he said.
