Australia’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 preparations have been dealt a blow as full-back Jacob Italiano and forward Mathew Leckie are sidelined with injuries. Italiano sustained an adductor injury during training, while Leckie suffered a hamstring strain in a group-stage match against the United States. Their absence was felt in Australia’s recent 0-0 draw with Paraguay, where the Socceroos remained in contention for the knockout stage.
Leckie’s absence is particularly significant following his standout performance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where his goal against Denmark propelled Australia into the knockout stage. Despite facing fitness challenges throughout the season with Melbourne City, the 35-year-old earned his fourth World Cup appearance, showcasing resilience and determination.
Coach Tony Popovic had to make adjustments in Italiano’s absence, deploying Jordan Bos as an inverted wing back on the right and Behich on the left against Paraguay. Bos, who usually plays as a left-back, excelled in this new role and was instrumental in creating opportunities alongside Cristian Volpato. Behich mentioned that this tactical shift had been practiced during training sessions and proved effective in securing a deserving result for Australia.
