The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has revealed that Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman, will soon assume the role of the party’s chairman. This announcement was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir during an event in Sylhet district. Following the recent passing of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the post of BNP chairperson has been vacant, with Tarique set to take over.
Fakhrul mentioned that the BNP plans to restart its election campaign from Sylhet, a tradition the party has upheld for a long time. Despite media concerns about the upcoming polls, the BNP remains steadfast in its demand for fair elections. The party’s leader emphasized the need to counter the rise of mob violence under the current interim government to safeguard democracy.
Concerns have been raised by BNP allies regarding the party’s inability to prevent its leaders from contesting in seats designated for allies in the upcoming national election. Reports indicate tensions in certain constituencies due to BNP leaders running as independent candidates against alliance agreements. Allegations of interference and intimidation have surfaced, leading to the expulsion of several BNP members.
With Bangladesh’s elections scheduled for February 12, internal conflicts within the BNP are exacerbating tensions with its alliance partners. The political landscape in Bangladesh is witnessing heightened discord as the BNP navigates challenges within its ranks and alliances.
