Bangladesh’s Independence Day and National Day were joyously celebrated in Assam and Tripura, marking the 55th anniversary of the historic event. The Assistant High Commissions of Bangladesh in Guwahati and Agartala arranged various programs to honor the day, featuring cultural performances and discussions on its significance. Special evening receptions and cultural events were held in both cities, welcoming guests from different Northeastern states of India.

Troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) shared sweets and greetings at border outposts along the India-Bangladesh border, symbolizing the enduring goodwill between the two nations. In Agartala, distinguished figures like Tripura Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia and Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commissioner Hasan Al Bashar Abul Ulayee addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need to strengthen bilateral relations for mutual welfare.

The Independence and National Day in Guwahati commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commissioner Zikrul Hasan Fahad, accompanied by the national anthem. Messages from Bangladesh’s top officials were read out, paying tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War. The day’s origins date back to March 26, 1971, when East Pakistan leaders declared independence, leading to a guerrilla war under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s leadership and eventual recognition of Bangladesh as an independent nation by India.
