Kolkata, Aug 19 (IANS) An older woman died under mysterious circumstances in Asansol of West Burdwan district on Wednesday. The police have detained the younger son and daughter‑in‑law for the possible murder of the woman.
The incident took place in Kalipahari area under Asansol South police station. The police identified the deceased as Baishakhi Hembram (56). Her body has been sent to the Asansol District Hospital for autopsy. The police have detained her younger son Rajib Hembram and his wife Shivani for questioning.
Jayanta Barman, another son of Baishakhi Hembram, said he lived a little far from where his mother and brother resided. He recounted that his sister came running to him in the morning and told him that his brother was beating their mother.
“I ran and saw my mother lying in a bloody state. When I took her to the hospital, the doctors said she was no longer alive,” he said.
Jayanta Hembram also alleged that his father worked at Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and received Rs 40 lakh at retirement. He claimed his brother Rajib Hembram had been demanding that money, while their mother was unwilling to give it.
“That is why Rajib had been causing unrest in the house for a long time. My brother killed my mother for that money,” he alleged.
A resident, Sanjay Singh, said he had heard about the woman’s death but did not know the cause.
“Some in the family are saying she fell from the stairs, while others are saying she was killed. Let the police investigate the matter,” he said.
After receiving the news, personnel from Asansol South Police Station, along with Asansol Durgapur Police Commissioner DC (Central) Dhruba Das, went to Baishakhi Hembram’s house in Kalipahari.
DC Central Dhruba Das said a woman had died, but the cause was not yet known.
“The body has been sent for autopsy. The family has not filed a complaint so far. We are waiting for the autopsy report. We will know the real cause of death only after the autopsy report comes. Meanwhile, two persons have been detained in connection with the incident,” he stated.
