The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) expressed strong support for the Centre’s ethanol blending initiative, dismissing claims of excessive water usage in ethanol production. BKS National President K. Sai Reddy emphasized that ethanol benefits farmers and the nation by increasing income, reducing reliance on imported oil, and combating pollution. Reddy clarified that ethanol production involves minimal water usage, with water in factories being recycled for sustainability.
The BKS leader highlighted the economic advantages of producing ethanol from crops like sugarcane, maize, and rice, stating that it offers better returns to farmers and enhances the country’s energy security. He advocated for vehicles that can run solely on ethanol and debunked concerns about ethanol-blended petrol affecting vehicle performance, noting its successful use in India for five years. Additionally, the BKS urged for petrol and diesel to be included in the GST regime to ensure uniform fuel prices nationwide and provide relief to consumers.
In other demands, the farmers’ group called for seamless crop procurement at minimum support prices, increased acquisition of moong, and prompt settlement of pending crop insurance claims in Madhya Pradesh. Reddy also encouraged farmers to embrace natural farming practices to reduce cultivation expenses. Earlier, a BKS delegation met Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to propose transferring the Kailaras Sugar Mill to farmers through a cooperative society instead of privatization. The delegation’s suggestion of forming a committee to manage the mill under the district collector’s supervision was positively received by the Chief Minister.
