Patna, Aug 19 (IANS) A serious case of alleged illegal detention, extortion and bribery has surfaced at Jadopur police station in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, prompting strict action by the district police.

According to the preliminary investigation, several people were allegedly detained at the police station for hours—and in one instance for around 36 hours—without an FIR, official record or apparent legal authorisation.

Their families were allegedly threatened with false cases and were demanded to pay money for their release or to have their names removed from cases.

Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinay Kumar received information about the alleged racket on August 16 and directed the DSP (Headquarters) to verify the allegations.

The subsequent inquiry reportedly uncovered several instances of alleged extortion.

Investigators found allegations involving Rs 50,000 allegedly demanded from a person through a middleman.

In another case, the alleged officers had taken Rs 75,000 for releasing a woman and her minor daughter.

Similarly, the alleged SHO and his subordinates have demanded Rs 55,000 to remove a young man’s name from a case.

The investigation team found evidence of frequent telephone conversations between the then SHO and the alleged middleman.

Based on the DSP’s findings, Case No. 185/2026 was registered against four alleged individuals, including the SHO at Jadopur police station, on August 18.

Police subsequently arrested Anil Ram, then SHO of Jadopur police station, Raju Yadav, alleged middleman/tout, Rakesh Kumar, village chowkidar, and Mahanth Kumar Yadav, village chowkidar.

The SHO and two chowkidaars were also suspended with immediate effect and sent to judicial custody.

The incident has prompted the Gopalganj police administration to reiterate a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, abuse of authority and illegal detention.

SP Vinay Kumar also warned that strict action would be taken against police personnel or intermediaries found attempting to intimidate witnesses or interfere with the investigation in any case in the district.
