Fears of LPG and petroleum product shortages in Bihar led to panic buying, prompting the Bihar Police to intervene. They issued an alert to prevent chaos and hoarding, despite government assurances of sufficient stocks. The Special Branch of the Bihar Police directed authorities to increase patrols around fuel distribution points to maintain order.
The alert, sent to various officials across the state, highlighted concerns about potential supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia. Authorities were instructed to watch for hoarding, black marketing, and maintain law and order near petrol pumps and LPG agencies. Gas agencies reported delays in fresh supplies, leading to long queues and temporary halts in commercial cylinder bookings in some districts.
To address the situation, the government invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to regulate supply and prevent hoarding. Measures include extending the interval for booking a second domestic cylinder and implementing verification processes during delivery. A high-level committee has been formed to monitor supplies, while residents in Katihar district raised concerns about alleged black marketing of LPG cylinders.
Residents fear further shortages and black marketing amid geopolitical tensions. District administrations face pressure to curb illegal practices and ensure fair distribution. Without swift action, consumers may continue to face challenges due to the crisis.
