The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the upgradation of the Khagaria–Purnea section of NH-31 and NH-231 to a four-lane highway, aiming to enhance Bihar’s agricultural heartland’s prosperity. This initiative is set to improve transportation for bananas from Khagaria and makhana from Purnea, vital for the region’s economy.
The upgrade, costing Rs 3936.05 crore, is a significant investment benefiting farmers who rely on efficient market access for their produce. By reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity, the project aims to minimize spoilage, maintain quality, and increase market value for perishable crops like bananas and makhana.
Historically prone to flooding, the Eastern Bihar region faces challenges in connectivity, impacting local communities and economic activities. The four-laning project includes engineering solutions to address flood-related issues, ensuring year-round reliable transportation and resilience against flooding, benefiting the Seemanchal region.
The upgraded corridor not only promises improved regional mobility by reducing travel time but also enhances interstate connectivity across eastern India. Strengthening road links between Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, the project is strategically important for economic and social integration, benefiting key economic, social, and logistics hubs in Bihar.
