Homeowners in Bihar’s Samastipur are rapidly adopting clean energy through the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, leading to zero electricity bills for many residents. In Samastipur, 3,970 applications have been received, with 550 beneficiaries already having solar panels installed in their homes. Anand Kumar, Executive Engineer of the Bihar State Electricity Board, mentioned that 511 people have received subsidy disbursements, aiming to ensure renewable energy benefits every household.
To promote wider participation, a Solar Fair is underway at Patel Maidan, allowing citizens to explore solar panel options, engage with vendors, and access bank financing for installation. The scheme’s subsidy structure provides Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and up to Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more. Officials emphasize that installing a 3-kW solar system is environmentally equivalent to planting 100 trees, offering long-term savings and contributing to sustainable energy objectives.
Launched on February 13, 2024, the initiative’s goal is to offer free electricity to households by facilitating rooftop solar panel installations. With a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the program offers significant subsidies, making solar power more accessible and promoting renewable energy adoption. The PM Surya Ghar Electricity Scheme combines financial support with environmental benefits, enabling citizens to reduce electricity costs, embrace clean energy, and positively impact the environment.
Described as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to revolutionize India’s energy sector by supplying solar power to one crore households by March 2027. With a target to benefit one crore households and save the government Rs 75,000 crore annually in electricity expenses, the program signifies a significant move towards clean energy adoption. It empowers millions to transition to renewable sources, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable development and energy innovation.
